A portrait session should feel relaxed, enjoyable and personal — and a little preparation helps everything flow smoothly. Here’s the guidance I share with my clients before a shoot.
1. Choose Clothing That Feels Like You
Forget fashion rules. Wear colours and textures that represent your personality. Avoid heavy logos, busy patterns and overstated jewellery. Simple, timeless clothing photographs beautifully.
2. Don’t Overthink Posing
I don’t expect you to pose. My job is to guide gently, observe your natural movement and capture genuine expression. The best portraits happen when you’re not trying too hard.
3. Location Matters, But Comfort Matters More
Whether we shoot in Edinburgh, Gullane, the coastline or an urban street, choose a location where you feel at ease. Familiarity creates confidence, which translates directly into the images.
4. Let the Weather Be Part of the Story
Natural light changes constantly — that’s part of the magic. Overcast skies, coastal mist and soft winter light often produce the most atmospheric portraits.
